What are writers for?

Truth telling, pleasure, illumination, and perturbation.

Quill and parchment or touch typing?

All of the above, depending on the intimacy required.

Required beverage while editing?

The stiffer the better.

Describe your imagination.

Boundless, chaotic, and larger than my bank account.

Anatomy of the Reader

Where’s your favorite place to read?

Trains, planes, couches, beds—wherever a good story can be found.

Have you ever read one of your books for pleasure?

The pleasure is always short lived, as the urge to improve invariably takes over.

What’s the one thing that the book you’re currently reading is missing?

I just finished reading Julian Barnes’s Homage to Hemingway. It could have been twice as long.

Describe your perfect book in the form of a three course meal.

Sorry, but at least five or more courses are required, before a meal gets really interesting.

Believes in: rationality, truth, and beauty, no matter how scarce they may be

Refuses to: compromise
